Question:

Who inspires you?

Answer:

I'm inspired by many people in the literary, music and fashion worlds, but they are completely blown out of the water by my amazing parents; they've worked tirelessly in their lives to provide me and my sisters with everything we could ever want and are selfless, caring, tolerant, patient, kind, loving and hugely positive people and devoted grandparents.

Roy and Linda, you rock. If I can be half as inspirational as you then I've done a good job in life.

Thank you for all the good times had and those to come and for making me laugh all the time even when you don't mean to be funny - like your first foray into online food shopping recently, when you chatted warmly to the delivery man for about ten minutes because you're so sociable and lovely and had a good old chuckle with each other when you realised you'd ordered 28 toilet rolls instead of 8 after some over zealous clicking.

Question:

Write down something you learnt today.

Answer:

In a world of terror and fanaticism where nothing is certain and you have to keep believing it will all be OK, sometimes you just need to focus on something irrelevant but wonderful to block out the horror - so today, thanks to Look Magazine, as a fashion devotee I learned that Kate Moss has three wardrobes - one big one and two everyday wardrobes, and recently she HIRED SOME PEOPLE to sort them out who archived everything, putting it all in paper and boxes labelled with Polaroids.

Constantly bombarded with news of tragedy beyond comprehension, this was a small thing that made me smile and answered a question I posed in a recent blog post about Kate. 'Sometimes at night I am kept awake with thoughts of that wardrobe. How big is it? Is it organised by colour? By defining era? Do things get lost?'

With the deepest respect, my heart goes out to the victims at Charlie Hebdo magazine who lost their lives on 7 January 2015 for believing in liberté, égalité and fraternité and the unarmed police officer who was killed in Paris this morning. May they rest in peace.

Question:

What was your first thought this morning when you woke up?

Answer:

Argh, it must be at least 9.00am!/I've overslept!/Bugger, I need to wash my hair/Oh God I have prep for meetings to squeeze in/Must look at my Sentence A Day Journal/Shall I go to the gym tonight or cram in blogging/Yikes, Alex is still asleep too!/Why is it so cold/Ooo, it's Grazia Tuesday/Is February Vogue out yet/I'll have to skip breakfast but then again I could grab a Pret Porridge on the way/ Hmm, or takeaway toast/Mmm, takeaway toast/I.. Oh, it's 5.00 am/Yes!

Yep, my brain actually works like this. Be still, my active brain.

The Year of the Book

IMG_9922

Mark Zuckerberg (Founder, Chairman and CEO of Facebook) has declared on Facebook (obvs) that 2015 will be the year of the book.

My challenge for 2015 is to read a new book every other week -- with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.

I'm excited for my reading challenge. I've found reading books very intellectually fulfilling. Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today. I'm looking forward to shifting more of my media diet towards reading books.

Now, for the record, me and Mark aren't on good terms (in my head - I've never met the guy). In a previous post I pulled him up for allowing misogynistic content to be posted on Facebook without any kind of punitive action and I recently made a resolution to consider giving Facebook the elbow once and for all.

Yet, this challenge can only be a good thing, and I applaud Mark for the statement and for daring people to go back to basics. Also, particularly loving the term 'media diet' and will consider ways of dropping it casually into my own lexicon.

As Richard Godwin points out in tonight's Evening Standard, his own media diet over the festive period consisted of books (yes!), music (oh YES!), film (whoop!) and conversation (hurrah!) and most importantly an abstinence from Facebook and the like.

So in celebration of Mark's declaration and in recognition that I am an unabashed bookworm, I'm going to make a note of the books I've read in 2015 to document my own personal Year of the Book; something to ponder on in 2016 and perhaps build on. I'll update my list as I go along.

Hopefully you'll find some good recommendations or maybe, like me, be inspired to read more (rather than take a selfie, tweet or Google celebs in bikinis in January. Unavoidable, but sickening as you accept they probably didn't eat a Terry's Chocolate Orange a day in December).

I'll leave you with Richard's Godwin's very wise tips on how to avoid the temptation of succumbing to bad habits.

Carry a book in your bag. Don't charge your phone by your bedside. Subscribe to a print magazine. Most of all, delete the Facebook app. You'll have so much more energy.

I'll raise a book to that.

Question:

Where do you live?

Answer:

For the most part, in my head (where it's full to the brim with a riot of fashion and a jumble of thoughts and there's always music in the air*) but, in reality, I reside in London's East End; specifically in a newly-moved-in house in Walthamstow that has the postcode E17 thrown in for good measure**.

* For the Twin Peaks lovers.

** For the 90s kids. I can't provide my postcode for official purposes without singing 'Deep deep down' in my head or reminiscing about bunking off from cross-country to nip back home (handily five minutes away from the school field) with my mates to watch East 17 on MTV.  Makes filling out a form more interesting.

A Sentence a Day - 3 January 2015

IMG_9186

My sister Michelle and her husband Craig gave me this beautiful journal as a Christmas present from Kikki K in Sydney - A Sentence a Day.

They know I'm a sucker for stationery. It provides a beautiful space to capture the little moments that make life big. Each day poses a question to answer - something to reflect on or, as cleverly suggested by Michelle, something to inspire and lead my day down a lovely new path.

Today is the 3 January 2015.

Question:

What three words best describe your day?

Answer:

ProductiveToday I got lost in my online banking, sorted scary financial stuff out and shredded receipts from November-ish that have been spilling out of a Liberty carrier bag and making feel me like a proper hoarder. It was a thankless, dull but necessary task. I have a clear head! I also have no money. However, I did budget for these gorgeous new kicks from & Other Stories. Now that's what I call Sensible Financial Planning.

NourishingThanks to the brilliant (painful) concept of Dry January and the adept cooking skills of my husband Alex, I consumed healthy, wholesome foods that hopefully will nourish my body and soul - including pomegranate, kiwi and plum, aubergine with mint, greek yoghurt, coconut water and peppermint and licorice tea. (My inner naughty side is sneering, stuffing millionaire's shortbread down my gob and quaffing prosecco).

LocalToday I hung out around my own neck of the woods, rather than venturing into the big smoke. I walked from E17 to the village like Wanstead which is fab and not far from Walthamstow via Eagle Pond. I discovered  The Larder where I ate a smashing plate full of hummus, sun-dried tomato, olive and crunchy seed salad, prepared just the way I like my salads - plentiful, substantial, with no ingredients scrimped on. Not a limp lettuce in sight, and a greedy portion of hummus to boot. Lovely.
