Hello, I’m Nicola.

I’m a freelance writer and music podcaster.

I’ve loved writing since I was a little girl, but initially focused my career on HR and people management. In 2016, I had a baby boy and my life turned upside down in the most beautiful way. During maternity leave, I started writing again in the (very small) gaps and realised how happy it made me.

So, I took a deep breath, set up my own freelance writing business and returned from maternity leave to HR on a part-time basis. In October 2023, I left the HR profession after more than 20 years so I could focus on my true passions, writing and podcasting.

My first ‘proper’ gig was writing content for Jazz FM’s website, covering festivals and shows and interviewing musicians. This was thanks to Rosie Kendrick, then Director of Programming at the station, who is now my podcast partner!. Life really can go full circle sometimes, can’t it?

Business-wise, I help publications, businesses and creatives find a way with words by writing articles, features, blogs, press releases, biographies, social media copy and more as well as editing and other services.

In early 2023, I started writing a Substack, as I also like to write for me, and for the sheer pleasure of simply writing. Sylvia Plath once said that, “…everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise.” I like to think I have a little bit of both.

I live with my book cover-designing husband Alex and our son Evan in east London. As a fiercely proud Londoner, I soak up everything this great city has to offer.

Around the parenting, working and writing, I’m normally out running with music or a podcast for company or hiding somewhere with a book. If you’re looking for me, I’m likely at a gig or having ‘just one, please...OK, just one more’ in a bar with friends in my favourite vintage dress or trouser suit.

I’m a Twin Peaks lover, coffee table book collector, and music history geek. Delicious food, sparkling wine and great company makes me very happy. I adore long walks, particularly along the British seaside or in the forest near where I live, playing tennis and watching football. I’ve loyally supported Crystal Palace FC since I was eight years old and my heart still belongs south of the river.
