IMG_9186-0 In 2015 I will be writing a Sentence a Day. You can read more about why here.

Today is the 2 February 2015.

Question:

Which famous living person would you like to have dinner with?

Answer:

Grace Dent - journalist, author, broadcaster and food critic extraordinaire; she'd blag us a table at the so-hot-it-hurts hot new hot place in hipsterville this week (avoiding queuing / smug rejection by an 18-year-old with a clipboard) and we'd get smashed on champagne and stuffed on something with hummus and cause all kinds of mischief; I imagine my stomach'd hurt from laughing - as it does when I read Grace and Flavour - and we'd sod about and reminisce about the 90s, and I'd take a cab all the way home and flip off my shoes, and quite possibly leave them in it, and best of all the Evening Standard would pick up the tab (probably).

The Year of the Book

IMG_9922

Mark Zuckerberg (Founder, Chairman and CEO of Facebook) has declared on Facebook (obvs) that 2015 will be the year of the book.

My challenge for 2015 is to read a new book every other week -- with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.

I'm excited for my reading challenge. I've found reading books very intellectually fulfilling. Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today. I'm looking forward to shifting more of my media diet towards reading books.

Now, for the record, me and Mark aren't on good terms (in my head - I've never met the guy). In a previous post I pulled him up for allowing misogynistic content to be posted on Facebook without any kind of punitive action and I recently made a resolution to consider giving Facebook the elbow once and for all.

Yet, this challenge can only be a good thing, and I applaud Mark for the statement and for daring people to go back to basics. Also, particularly loving the term 'media diet' and will consider ways of dropping it casually into my own lexicon.

As Richard Godwin points out in tonight's Evening Standard, his own media diet over the festive period consisted of books (yes!), music (oh YES!), film (whoop!) and conversation (hurrah!) and most importantly an abstinence from Facebook and the like.

So in celebration of Mark's declaration and in recognition that I am an unabashed bookworm, I'm going to make a note of the books I've read in 2015 to document my own personal Year of the Book; something to ponder on in 2016 and perhaps build on. I'll update my list as I go along.

Hopefully you'll find some good recommendations or maybe, like me, be inspired to read more (rather than take a selfie, tweet or Google celebs in bikinis in January. Unavoidable, but sickening as you accept they probably didn't eat a Terry's Chocolate Orange a day in December).

I'll leave you with Richard's Godwin's very wise tips on how to avoid the temptation of succumbing to bad habits.

Carry a book in your bag. Don't charge your phone by your bedside. Subscribe to a print magazine. Most of all, delete the Facebook app. You'll have so much more energy.

I'll raise a book to that.

Fashion, Style & Other Stories

LO-13-9-NY-8_5_301101 Calling all fashion lovers. Would all fashion lovers please report immediately to Regent Street. I repeat, please make your way immediately to Regent Street.

Material Whirl is very, very excited about H&M's high-end label, & Other Stories which landed with an almighty thump this weekend, launching its debut store on Regent Street. I am already an unashamed lover of H&M and its modern take on fashion. I always devour its in-store magazine featuring inspirational mood boards, new and up-and-coming designers and its unique interpretation of the catwalk trends. I adore the new flagship store on Oxford Street and loved that it was H&M that took over Paris Fashion Week with its catwalk debut within the grounds of the Musée Rodin. Model of the moment Cara Delevingne even walked as part of an army of top models.

Right now though, it is & Other Stories that has me trawling through its trendy website and trying to work out when I can next get to Regent Street. This is H&M's cool big sister you really want to hang out with.

Filling a two-floor space with a crisp white interior and black spotlights that illuminate all the gorgeous treats on offer, & Other Stories offers minimalist clean lines that are in no way dull. Shiny metallics, towering chunky wedge heels, explosive pops of neon and the edgy and slightly kooky colours that my eye is always naturally drawn to are a perfect way to freshen up my wardrobe for spring (when it finally decides to make an appearance).

The label also offers beauty products and clever accessories which are a core part of the brand, such as preppy leather satchels, on-trend duffel bags and chunky jewellery to update your look. The price tag may be a little higher than H&M, but it is not extortionate. The Evening Standard's Emma McCarthy described the label as one 'To help those with champagne tastes on a beer budget' and as this is a perfect way to sometimes describe my approach to fashion (and a reflection of my bank account) I couldn't agree more.

& Other Stories offers something a bit different, timeless and chic style on a high-street budget. I particularly love the makeup with a message - 'Go girl, seek happy nights to happy days...' carved into the blusher.  Definitely created with this stylist city in mind where you never know where the day will take you...
